A versatile utility player, Pugh has been in and out of Tony Pulis’s first eleven since joining from Preston initially on loan in November 2007, and then permanently in January 2008. He is generally thought to produce his best from the centre of midfield, though the vast majority of his recent appearances have come from the left back position or on the left wing.
He had a tough time during the early months of the 2008/09 season seldom even making the bench, and has admitted that he considered leaving the club, but went on to feature regularly again after returning to the side away at Newcastle in early December. His first goal for Stoke had come in the League Cup victory over Rotherham the month before.

He was very much a fringe player in the opening months of the following season, waiting until February 2010 to make his first Premier League start, in the home defeat to Arsenal. He found the net that day but still looks set to only be used sparingly in the near future. He seems content with the role though, having extended his contract at the Britannia Stadium in October 2009.
