An intelligent midfielder, Tonge joined the Potters on the final day of the 2008 summer transfer window, signing minutes before the midnight deadline. He was a hero in his eight years at Sheffield United, but has never displayed the same sort of form at Stoke, struggling to impose himself on the first team picture, with many of his handful of appearances coming out wide rather than in his preferred central role.
He has claimed that he is happy to remain at Stoke and fight for his place, but is one of several fringe players he could well leave the club soon, an eventually that looks likely after he was allowed to join Preston on loan in November 2009 and the Derby on similar terms three months later.
