A powerful specimen, with enviable aerial prowess, Cort joined Stoke from Crystal Palace in January 2008 for £1.2 million, a club record fee at the time, having spent a successful two month loan at the club. He was a hugely important player in our promotion, netting an impressive eight goals from the centre of defence and began life in the Premier League as first choice, entertaining fans with his heading style, which has been likened to a ballerina’s leap. After the signings of Abdoulaye Faye and Ibrahima Sonko and owing to the good form of Ryan Shawcross, he was soon frozen out of the side though, and did not feature between December 2008 and May 2009. After going on record as saying that he may be forced to look for a new club, he was sold to Burnley for £1.5 million, potentially rising to £2 million, in January 2010.
For a centre back, he has a remarkably good disciplinary record, having gone almost 200 competitive matches without being booked between April 2004 and August 2009.
