Joining Stoke from Sunderland in late July, Whitehead became Tony Pulis’s first major signing of summer 2009. With 200 games for Sunderland, and several years as a Premier League captain, he boasts experience belying his still young age, and is a hard-working, if unglamourous midfielder who is also capable of deputising at right back or on the right wing.
With four years ahead of him at Stoke, he has become a solid and useful member of the squad, winning the favour of the fans who appreciate his work rate and physical style, despite a slow start at the Britannia Stadium. He scored his first goal in a Stoke shirt during the club’s 3-1 FA Cup win over Arsenal in January 2010.
