Arismendi is an extremely highly rated Uruguayan international defensive midfield player who joined Stoke on a four year deal from Nacional, the champions of his homeland, for a fee that could eventually rise to £4.8 million, on the second last day of the transfer window in the summer of 2009. The move was something of a landmark one for the Potters, as it was the first time we signed a player direct from South America, after he was recommended by our scouts there, and also the first time manager Tony Pulis spent significant money on a foreign player unproven in the English game.
Physically strong and combative, he is expected to fit well into the Premier League and become an important player for Stoke over the next few years. In order to help him better adjust to life in England and the English style of football, he was sent out on loan to League One side Brighton, managed by his fellow Uruguayan Gus Poyet, until the end of the season.
